IL Gun-Control Bills Scheduled for Hearing

2/24/2010

• Two Illinois gun-control bills are scheduled to be heard tomorrow, Wednesday, February 24th, in the Senate Criminal Law Committee:

• SB3092  is the Senate companion bill to House Bill 180, which relates to the licensing and registration of Illinois gun dealers (that sell handguns) and consumer handgun purchases.

• As reported earlier this month, House Bill 180 was passed onto the floor of the Illinois House for further consideration.

• SB3036 would ban semi-automatic firearms deemed to be “assault weapons,”  and some firearm attachments, as well as any .50 caliber rifle or .50 caliber cartridge.  The proposal would also require current owners of such items 90 days to prove ownership to the Illinois State Police after the law goes into effect.

• You may recall that, last week, proposed legislation that would require microstamping technology on all newly manufactured semiautomatic handguns sold in Illinois, beginning in 2011, was also introduced in the Illinois state senate.

•  Since no manufacturer is currently producing a firearm capable of microstamping a cartridge case, the passage of Senate Bill 3425 would effectively ban new handgun sales in Illinois.
