Pre-rut - Grant Woods

Throughout most of the whitetails’ range, the last week of October is the pre rut. This is a period during the breeding cycle of whitetails when bucks testosterone levels are high but, most does aren’t feeling the urge to dance.

One of my Favorites: Elk - Melissa Bachman

I can’t count the number of times I’ve arrived into a camp and heard, “You just missed the action – or, I’m sure next week things will really be ramped up.” Timing’s seldom perfect, but on this elk trip- my timing couldn’t have been better.

Ontario Bear Hunt - Melissa Bachman

We've had incredible luck predator calling black bears in the past, but it’s always been in Alaska on Prince of Wales Island, and it’s usually in the spring. This season I was planning to start off on a bear hunt in Ontario. The usual method of hunting for this area is done over bait. However, I had another idea.

Humidity - Grant Woods

As a research biologist I’ve spent a lot of my career studying deer activity patterns. As a hunter, I wanted this information because I thought it would help me be a more successful hunter (that’s one reason I became a biologist!).

Importance of Shooting Sticks - Melissa Bachman

Making a good, clean, ethical shot is every hunter’s goal. One way I’ve found to help ensure this in the field is by using shooting sticks. You’ve put in the time at the range, you know how your gun and ammo shoot, so make sure you’re giving yourself every advantage in the field.
